Biography

Major John “Ed” Buchanan is Commander, Detachment 1, 2d Space Operations Squadron, 50th Space Wing, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. He leads 15 military personnel operating the Navstar Global Positioning System Ground Station, providing leadership, oversight, protection, and sustainment of operational assets worth over $12M, shouldering the responsibility for around-the-clock command and control for the world’s largest military satellite constellation.  Major Buchanan manages all aspects of daily operations including routine and emergency maintenance, as well as the career development and progression of all assigned personnel.

Major Buchanan enlisted in the Air Force in October 1979 and was commissioned in November 1994 through Officer Training School.  Since commissioning, he has served as flight commander in a Minuteman III missile squadron, deputy missile combat crew instructor in an operational support squadron and Commandant of Cadets at a Reserve Officer Training Corps detachment.  While assigned to the 2d Space Operations Squadron, he served as Global Positioning System crew commander, instructor, and commander of an 80-person operations flight.

Major Buchanan is from Indianapolis, Indiana.
