All-American Scholar

Eligibility: Any student nominated by an educator as an All-American Scholar may apply for scholarship. To apply, complete and return the biographical form. Once received, we will send out an application for scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded entirely based on academic scores and achievements. If you feel that you can compete, you should persuade a teacher who knows you well to nominate you. The teacher can nominate you online by clicking the Nominations button on the scholarship’s Web page and filling out the electronic nomination form (the nomination form is different for high school and college students). After you have been nominated, you will receive a biographical data form in the mail; fill this out and return it as instructed to obtain a copy of the scholarship application. Even if you don’t win the scholarship, being recognized as an All American Scholar will make a nice addition to your academic resume. Coca-Cola Scholars is one of the most prestigious and competitive scholarships. Every year this program awards $20,000 to 50 National Scholars and $4,000 to 200 Regional Scholars selected from applicants all over the country. Since this scholarship is so competitive and the awards are so large, you should spend plenty of time exploring the Web site to learn about the program and the selection process. When you arrive at the site, you will see a series of links down the left-hand side. First, make sure you qualify by clicking Bottler Search and entering your city, state, and zip code to find out if your high school is located in a participating bottler’s territory. If you are eligible to apply, click How It Works to learn about the selection process and the general qualities that Coca-Cola is looking for in scholarship applicants. Also click Our Scholars, where you can read detailed descriptions of past winners; this will give you an even better idea of the qualities the program is seeking in its candidates. Finally, go to the FAQs, which answer the most common questions about the scholarship program, including questions about specific eligibility requirements and the application procedures. Feel free to explore the remaining links to find out who the previous year’s winners were, which colleges past winners have attended, and more about the mission of Coca-Cola’s educational foundation. If you choose to apply, click the Apply Online link (this link will not appear if the program is not currently accepting applications).

Teaching

Noyce Scholarship Program

Sponsor: Indiana State University

Web Site: gejdg@isugw.indstate.edu

Amount of Scholarship: Up to $10,000 per year plus $2000 for room and board based on need.

Number of Awards: Five transfer students plus up to three transition-to-teaching students

Education: Intended for graduates/transfer from Indiana's community colleges and for mid-career changes.

Indiana State University is working to help address a shortage of mathematics and science teachers in urban schools by recruiting both transfer students from two-year colleges and professionals who can use existing degrees in math and sciences as a launching pad to careers in teaching.

A $491,303 National Science Foundation grant will fund stipends of up to $10,000 per year for five transfer students and two to three transition-to-teaching students. The grant is one of 16 highly competitive awards funded by the NSF this year through the Robert Noyce Scholarship Program. The Noyce Program estimates 250,000 math and science teachers will be needed nationwide over the next decade.

New teachers will be needed both to replace those who will be retiring in coming years and to serve increasing numbers of students, particularly in urban areas, said Charles Amlaner, professor of ecology and organismal biology. The grant will allow ISU to increase the number of math and science teachers it graduates each year by 25 percent, Amlaner said.

“Our program is unique because it partners faculty in the sciences with the College of Education to create a problem-based learning environment,” said Jay Gatrell, administrative fellow in ISU’s College of Arts and Sciences and assistant professor of geography.

“What also makes our program distinct is an emphasis on urban areas, a partnership with the Indianapolis Public Schools, and a commitment on the part of teachers who graduate from our program to teach in a high needs school,” Gatrell said.

“The dual approach of recruiting both transfer students from Ivy Tech Community Colleges and Vincennes University as well as appealing to those who would seek a mid-career change through the transition to teaching program offers a rich mix of students to meet the pressing challenges in the math and science areas,” said Robert Williams, dean of Indiana State’s College of Education.

Indiana State’s nationally recognized Professional Development School program includes five schools within the Indianapolis Public Schools system: Arlington and Northwest high schools, McFarland Middle School, and Brandes (IPS School No. 65) and Miller (IPS School No. 114) elementary schools. ISU faculty hope to utilize those schools for teacher training for Noyce Scholarship recipients.

“A large concentration of industries that demand skilled workers in the sciences, such as Eli Lilly and Co., also makes the Indianapolis area attractive for real-world problem-solving,” Amlaner said.
