Health Checker

Return to tutorial list

There are two parts to the Course Health Checker.  The first checks External Links and the other checks for illegal characters in your course.

The External Link function will look at your links, but only indicate if the links are good or bad.  If your use the Link Checker function found in Course tools, you will have more functionality and a more complete idea of how external links are functioning.

To use the External Link Check function, click on the link and a report will be displayed indicating individual link status.  If problems are found you will need to find the link and fix the problem.

The Invalid Character Check will check your course by specific areas. These areas are:

  • Announcements
  • Content
  • Discussion Board
  • Staff information

Invalid Character can have one of two unexpected consequences. An illegal character can

  • change or limit the functionality or display of an entire page
  • display as an unrecognizable character in text

To use the Illegal Character Check, first click on the link for the area you need to check

A new window will open to display the status of that area.  If an illegal character is found it will be displayed in context.

To resolve this you can click on the “Fix” button on the right side of the screen.  The illegal characters will be replaced.  When you are finished with an area, click on the OK button.
