The master of science in health and safety includes a specialization in occupational safety management.

Graduates of the safety program are qualified to be specialists who:

NOTE ON PROGRAM COMPLETION:  A distance learning student is considered a part-time student. The University allows part-time students seven years to complete their degree work. Due to the frequency of course offerings, the minimum time to complete the degree is two years.

Requirements for All Degree Tracks  (9-12 credit hours)
HLTH 601 Research Methodology in Health and Safety (3 credits)
HLTH 604 Research Design and Data Analysis in Health and Human Performance (3 credits)
One of the following:
HLTH 629 Field Research Project in Health or Safety (3 credits)
HLTH 699 Master's Thesis (6 credits)
Requirements for Occupational Safety Management Specialization (12 credit hours)
12 credit hours from this block:
HLTH 605 Occupational Systems Analysis (3 credits)
HLTH 606 Human Factors/Ergonomics in Safety Management (3 credits)
HLTH 607 Transportation Management (3 credits)
HLTH 608 Safety Legislation, Litigation, and Compliance (3 credits)
HLTH 609 Applied Communication in Health and Safety (3 credits)

Admission Requirements
To be admitted, applicants must satisfy the following:

  1. Hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution, with course work in the following areas:

    -- One year college level chemistry (organic and inorganic plus lab); and
    -- One semester of college algebra, trigonometry, or calculus
     
  2. Satisfy one of the following:

    -- Baccalaureate degree in safety management; or
    -- Two years of professional work experience within the field (as approved by the department); or
    -- Personal proficiency recognition via certification
     
  3. Submit scores for the General Tests of the Graduate Records Examination (GRE)
     
  4. Submit a letter of interest describing their academic and or employment experience as well as their reasons for pursuing the master’s degree;
     
  5. Be available for an interview, which may be conducted by telephone.
