" Time management is the key in college. "
As long as you know where your priorities are, you are going to be successful. I worked 32 hours per week at Union Hospital and went to school full time my entire college experience. It was hard sometimes to ensure my education came before my work, but I was able to pull through it. Union Hospital was a great employer because they were very willing to be flexible with my work schedule every semester to ensure my success in both my school and my work. I have to thank them for their flexibility and their patience with me. I truly could not have done it without them.
I currently have a 3.77 GPA. Indiana State helped to fund my education through academic scholarships. I am so appreciative of those funds. I was able to travel to Taiwan and Hong Kong with Indiana State in the Spring of 2007. I had such a great time that I decided my Spring 2008 semester of my senior year I will study abroad in the Czech Republic. I cannot wait to have this experience. Thanks to Janis Halpern for all her help with this.
I have already accepted an accounting position with Defense Finance and Accounting Service in Indianapolis, Indiana. I will start there in the Summer of 2008. I have to thank my accounting professors who allowed the DFAS employees to discuss their organization which intrigued me to seek employment there. My family has been a large key to my success at Indiana State. They have been very supportive and have helped me when I was very stressed. I have met a lot of great professors at Indiana State with whom I plan to continue to talk to post-graduation. I really do think they care about their students and each one's success. There are too many to name, but a few are Dr. Harris, Dr. Moncada, Dr. Sanders, Mrs. Robinson, and Dr. Svihla. What wonderful professors Indiana State has.
Good Luck!

" One class at a time...one assignment at a time..."
Call your professor and clarify what you do not comprehend. Don't think that your professor is psychic and knows what you mean all the time. Talk in mutually respectful terms at all times to professors, staff, and fellow students. We are all busy and all want success. Watch out for the creep in the corner named "Mr. Procrastination." He'll bite you every time! Keep your goals at arms reach.
My graduating GPA is 4.0. I give much thanks to Dr. Nora (my advisor and teacher); and Dr. Gilberti (Department Chair and fabulous teacher), a person whom always goes the extra mile for his students success; and Dr. Mupinga (who painstakingly teaches us how to write at the graduate level!). And very importantly, I would like to extend a gracious "thank you" to Jean Overfelt (the behind-the-scenes guru) for all of her assistance in making my success a smooth operation. On a personal note, I thank my mentor and my kind husband (whom is also pursuing his advanced degree), my sister (who was supportive and helped run family matters), and lastly, my two grade-school children for helping to raise themselves over the past few years! I currently am teaching career development courses on-line. I have been interviewing for HR Director positions. I plan to keep teaching at least one class after I re-enter the workforce full-time.

" You have to be motivated and organized. "
You must keep a calendar of due dates and frequently check what is due and when. Never get behind. I kept all class materials in a binder to view throughout the semester for references. Order books early and maybe you can get them reduced as a used book. Keep in touch with professor if you have questions. The professors are there to help. They want your success as much as you do. Dr. Betsy Frank was my first professor at ISU, and she is also my faculty advisor throughout my R.N.-B.S.N. courses. I enjoyed classes with professors Dr. Dale O'Neal and especially Melody McKinney.
My current GPA is 3.91. I was a College of Nursing scholarship recipient in 2005. I plan to work in community health or nursing administration.

" Get to know the professors and leaders of your department and the school. "
You would be hard-pressed to find a more dedicated group of people than you will find at Indiana State University. If you meet them half way, they will do whatever they can to help you. Take advantage of the knowledge and help the faculty is willing to share with you - during and after your stay at Indiana State University. They are great, with a few minor exceptions, and have always been willing to help me in any way possible.
I am completing my master's degree in the Spring of 2004 in Educational Administration. My anticipated GPA is 4.0. (Waiting to hear on my last class.) I am moving into the administrative side of education and plan to continue working toward my Ed.D. and Ph.D. in a couple of years. The staff at Indiana State has always been a tremendous help to me, and they are second to none. The Education Department is one of the best in the country, and the administrative side of the department is just outstanding. From the professors to the secretaries, everyone is first class and handles themselves with a great deal of integrity and professionalism.
Postscript: My overall Graduate GPA ended up a 3.92. My career goals include moving into Educational Administration, and eventually earning my Ph.D. The faculty in the ELAF Department in the Education Building are absolutely great. Their expertise and help were invaluable through the Master's Program.

" Always be in communication with your professors. "
The number one tip I (as an older student) can share is to always be in communication with your professors. They cannot read your mind. Most want to help you achieve your goals but cannot if you do not talk to them.
The most help comes from God of course. Next, I could not have done this without the support of my parents, my husband, and my kids. I have had many professors give me encouragement along the way, for example: Peggy Weber and Rhonda Impink; my sociology adviser and professor Mr. Boyd; and Professor Tom Steiger. I never did have very high grades but they knew I worked and tried hard for what I got. There were times I wanted to give up. Being 43 years old, I was getting frustrated with new technology and other changes. However, Rhonda Impink was always there to tell me I could do it.
I want to thank ISU for the opportunity to come back and finish my BS degree. I feel more complete now.

Whether you take classes or not you will be just as old in the future. Besides, classes are tax deductible.
I am 42 years old and have a pretty good job that pays fairly well. I work full time as a construction inspector and CAD designer for a firm in Lafayette. I need around 20 credits to graduate. I am not sure whether I will use my degree or not when I graduate, but I want to finish.

" Stay on top of your work, listen to all of the lectures, and do research outside of the classroom. "
Do not get behind in any of your classes. It's hard to catch up once you are behind. Listen to the lectures; they hold a lot of information that you can not find in the notes or even your books. Finally, do research outside of the classroom. You'll find that all of the information you learned in class will all fit together.
I started at ISU in the Fall of 2003. My current GPA is 3.5/4.0. I am going to be the first college graduate in my family in the Fall of 2006. My career goal is find a job within the Federal Government, hopefully with the Department of Homeland Security, and work toward a master's degree at some point. I am currently an Assistant Benefit Manager at the Laborers International Union of North American.
I would like to acknowledge my mother and father for encouraging me to finish this degree. And my husband, John, for his loving support and encouragement throughout my education. I would also like to thank my in-laws, Richard, Bernadette, and David, for helping me through all of the good times and bad. Finally, this degree is for my best friend Denise, who passed away on September 24, 2005. Thank you for pressuring me to continue my education.
I also would like to acknowledge my faculty advisor, Cindy Crowder, for getting me started at ISU, being patient with me while I completed my assignments, and answering all of the stupid questions. " Take it one semester at a time, one class at a time - and you can make it happen. "
For those of you working full time with a family, take it one semester at a time, one class at a time, and you can make it happen. Looking at the big picture can often be more than we can handle.
In May I will graduate (hopefully) with a 4.0 GPA and realize a dream that I have safeguarded for years.
Indiana State University Distance Education (DE) made that dream a reality for me by offering their quality DE program. So often I hear that Distance Ed is for those who want an easy way out; however that is simply not true. DE is the answer for those of us with demanding jobs or family ties that prevent us from fulfilling our educational desires in a traditional class room.
DE is not for the faint of heart! Be prepared to work long and hard for the road ahead is going to be a bit bumpy. When people laugh or challenge you about your endeavors, challenge them to give it a whirl.
Not all DE courses are created equally; some are merely glorified correspondence courses of less than desirable delivery. All of my classes at ISU have been well thought out, planned, and delivered save one. For this I am thankful.
Seeing the difference between ISU DE courses and those of other schools has given me new career possibilities. I will most likely seek employment in either the delivery of DE courses or the supervision of such.
I would also like to thank Cindy Crowder for all that she has done for me over the past couple of years. She has been a blessing to have as an advisor. Mrs. Crowder takes time to get to know her students personally and to assist them far beyond just the expected norm. She made the journey a pleasant one for me, and I am sure many others as well.

Professor Thomas Patterson was so helpful in the distance education program. He provided examples for the theory being discussed and went over and over ideas until we (students) were satisfied that we understood. When my parents had their car accident in January of 2006, I called him, and he worked it out so that I could complete another proficiency paper at a later date in order to be with my parents at the hospital in another state.
I really appreciate his willingness to work with students as well as his extreme effort to provide a quality education.

" For anyone thinking they cannot got back to school in their forties -- I did it - and it was fun. "
In fact, I found some of my classes were easier for me because I was older. I chose ISU while living in South Carolina because I was from Indiana and knew the school was an old, established one. So I attended classes through the DegreeLink System, took classes locally in South Carolina and later Florida, and also through the Indiana College Network. The point is that it was possible to complete my B.S. in Community Health at ISU without being on campus.
Online classes are not easier, as some folks think, because you must prove you are doing the work with more assignments, and you don't have the benefit of listening to live discussions or asking questions at the moment you have them. However, if one does the assignments, keeps to a schedule, and keeps up good communication with the instructor, it becomes comfortable. And the professors, such as Dr. Gabany and Dr. Peterson, are so helpful in explaining things and getting right back to you when you e-mail them, so you really don't feel so alone in taking these classes.
Also, I have been so surprised to have done so well and received awards and honors that I never dreamed I would get as a distance student.
And one last thing. I used the Tuition Management System, which I highly recommend, because I am now in my 50's and ready to start the second half of my life with a new career, and my schooling is completely paid for as well. Who could ask for more?
I am graduating with a 4.0 GPA. I received the Outstanding Student of the Year in Community Health Award in 2004, have been on the Dean's List the past two years, am a member of Golden Key and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Societies, and I am listed in the Who's Who of University Students 2004-2005.
My career goals are to create a new company dedicated to bringing enlightenment to people that they must take responsibility for their lifestyle choices. And they also must be actively involved in their healthcare by becoming informed consumers who ask questions instead of blindly accepting a crumbling healthcare system.
Special Note: I would like to acknowledge Dr. Stephen Gabany, who has been my inspiration throughout this whole experience as my professor and my adviser. He talked me through many moments of self-doubt. And also my husband, who has been a real sport by listening patiently to his wife's discussions of topics of which I am sure he had no interest -- and cheering me on when I was faced with difficult classes. And lastly, to my mom, who was my strongest supporter in following my dream but unfortunately left this world in March, a little to soon to see it happen.

While getting a master's degree and working is difficult, distance learning has made going to school much easier. Just think about no more waiting for a parking space at school (at least it is very true in California schools); rushing to make to class on time. But I do miss the campus life.
After completing my master's degree, I want to continue my education in the psychology aspect of criminal theories. But this will not happen until I complete an Ironman event! Yes, besides working full time, and studying, I also race in marathons and triathlons. That's where all my time goes!

Make a four- to five-year plan of your goals and dreams. While creating this plan, be as specific as possible with what courses you need to take and the possibility of graduate school. During your coursework, map out when assignments are due. This way, you learn to micromanage your time better in doing your assignments and by accomplishing your goals.
Next thing you know, you're graduating college with a high GPA, and you are continuing with graduate school or a career-starting job.
The lesson that I learned, in working full-time and being active with my family and the community, is that my time is extremely limited. If I fail to read an assignment, write a paper, or take an exam, I can't make up that time, and I will fail. Even when I wasn't in the mood, I still endured. How? By re-reading my 4-5 year plan. This January, I'm attending graduate school at Michigan State.

Thank you so much, ISU, for offering distance education. I started college at the age of 49. I earned my associate's degree at Ivy Tech in Evansville, then seamlessly moved to Indiana State and completed my bachelor's degree exclusively online. It took six full years, because I work full time, but I finished with a GPA of 4.0. I'm very proud of myself.
Now I plan to study for the CPA exam and begin working on an MBA. Not bad for someone who never even considered going to college. In fact, I only went to Ivy Tech because the factory where I worked closed, and I was having trouble finding a job. I discovered I could go to college with a grant from the Workforce Investment Act (WIA), and thought "what the heck." Anyway, I discovered I really liked college, and was good at it. " You must be a self-starter and motivated. "
You must be a self-starter and motivated to complete your degree via distance education. If you are having problems with a class, request a meeting with your professor. If impossible to do so face to face, try webcam. All my professors truly wanted to see me graduate, so they were all helpful when needed.
If you are lucky enough to have a spouse and children, explain to them how important this is to you, and that you may need some extra help during the years it will take to complete your degree. My husband started doing dishes after 25 years of never doing them! Your family can be your best support system. Engage them in what you are studying. If they do not understand it, they can at least encourage you!
I am a non-traditional student who returned to ISU in Fall 2004 and will graduate Fall 2009. I have worked full-time as the Building Manager at Landsbaum Center for Health Education during the entire time and have taken all but one class as distance education (that was an Italian Wines class and just impossible to take online and enjoy).
It is possible to get a degree completely online. I was awarded the Wabash Valley Human Resources Management Scholarship for 2009-2010 and was selected as a candidate for the first Women of ISU scholarships (do not know yet on results). " It really is worth the time and effort. "
Don't get discouraged and think that there's no end in sight. Believe me, there really is light at the end of the tunnel. I put off completing my degree for ten years, and decided to finish it about a year and one-half ago, with family to think about, a full-time job, and several part-time (off-duty) jobs to boot. It really is worth the time and effort.
I would tell other students not to put off taking their courses. Take as many courses as you can possibly handle. The Criminology Program is great. There are a number of courses that are very helpful and directly affected my day-to-day operations as a law enforcement officer.
I am a Vanderburg County (Indiana) Deputy Sheriff. I have been a law enforcement officer for 13 years, and also hold an associate degree in Police Studies from Eastern Kentucky University. I should graduate with honors (3.67 GPA). I am a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Fraternal Order of Police, US Deputy Sheriff Association, the American Criminal Justice Association (Lambda Alpha Epsilon), and am a Kentucky Colonel. I am married and have two children.
I completed my degree by distance education and the distance education department staff were extremely helpful. I would have to thank Kelly Pierce for all of her help, as she was the one who mostly had to deal with all of my problems and questions. My advisor, Matthew Morgan, was a great help as well. Thanks a bunch! And, thanks for everything State!
I would recommend that anyone considering completing a degree in Criminology, but feels they cannot take the time to attend classes, or who cannot attend classes at ISU, definitely look into the distance education curriculum. All the classes needed for the bachelor degree and I believe for the associate and master degrees also, are offered by distance education means, whether print-based correspondence or online. These classes can also be completed through IHETS and by other means.
GOOD LUCK !

" Never give up. Get that degree! "
But remember that you can never stop learning ... ever. I left college 20 years ago without completing my degree. It didn't seem important until I tried to improve my career status. It seemed I was not eligible for higher-income jobs because I didn't have a bachelor's degree.
Finally, when my son was born, I knew I had to act. I'm glad I did. I am driven and motivated and understand so much more than I did 20 years ago.

I am a 52-year-old distance education student, and if I can do this (get my B.S.) - then you can. You do have to keep on top of things. Make sure you know what date and time assignments are due, and do all the work required. Email your professors if you need to. It may take a day or so for them to get back to you, but they will.
Time management is the most critical aspect of online learning. Just because you can log on 24 hours a day, don't think you have all the time you need to do the work. You don't. Keep on top of it, and you will succeed. My computer has the stickies I can put on the desktop, and I write when something is due by the soonest date, then next, and so on. I keep that current, and it really helps.
So far, I have a 3.56 GPA and hope to graduate with at least a 3.6 (to graduate with honors). I was born in Johnson County, Indiana at Camp Atterbury, an Army camp where my Dad was stationed. I moved to California in '77 and finally went to college, got married, but didn't graduate. So, when I found out I could go back to school at ISU, even though I was going to be an "older" student, I was thrilled and jumped at the chance.
Thank you ISU! I'll have graduated in 4 years, (2 at a community college in California and 2 at ISU), going 12 semesters without a break. So, it will be good to take Summer '06 off but then start working on my master's at CSU-Domingo Hills, California in Negotiation, Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding. But, before that, I hope to start working full time for the Co. Probation Department where I am currently doing my internship. The Adult and Juvenile PO's have made me feel welcome.
The Criminology Department at Indiana State University is (with one exception) first class all the way. I am proud to have graduated with a BS in Criminology from ISU. The work is challenging because it should be.
Special Note: I want to especially thank Dr. Jeff Schrink, who helped me with a problem back in Spring '05. Professor Grimes has always been good in answering my email messages. He is a great professor. Professor Cannady is one of the fairest professors I have had. Dr. Culotta is the best. I will have her (I think) in Spring '06. Dr. Skelton is a fantastic professor. Professor Hoffman (in English) is the absolute best. She is exactly what you want in a professor. I am taking her course this semester (Fall '05) via videotape, and I feel like I'm finally part of a class. Professor Yaw in ITE is also a very fair and excellent professor. I have learned a lot in ITE 335. Everyone should take this course. I also want to thank my wife Valerie, who has helped me these past 3.5 years. I know it has been a bit of a struggle, but we are better off now than we would've been without ... I love my twin daughters Sarah and Michaela all the way to the farthest star and back.

" Follow up with your professors after you e-mail assignments. "
Hold on to as much of your correspondence as possible, and follow up with your professors after you e-mail assignments. Sometimes wires get crossed, and they don't receive your homework. Don't hesitate to e-mail or call your professors. This is the same as raising your hand in class. They are there to help you.
I have carried a 3.8 GPA and have been initiated into several academic honorary societies since starting the DegreeLink Program between Vincennes University and ISU. Among the awards I received were: Golden Key, Phi Kappa Phi, Epsilon Pi Tau, and the National Dean's list. I could not have done all of this without help from my advisor, Dr. Gordon Minty, and my guardian angel, Heather Marchino. Heather has been my go-to since I began this program, and her assistance has been invaluable. I would recommend the distance ed program to anyone. It was far easier for me than traditional coursework, as this did not require classroom attendance.

" Keep the lines of communication open and stay focused and organized. "
As a distant learning student I always thought the distance was a concern, but the professors and my fellow students were always available to "help out" whatever the situation. Keep the lines of communication open and stay focused and organized. Distance learning is a wonderful forum with which to attain your degree !
I am a 49 year old Library Media Specialist in a K-5 Elementary School. I chose ISU because of the quality of the courses and the knowledge of the professors. I am from NY where the standards are extremely high and this program is recriprocal with the programs in NY. I was in contact with many of my professors over the past 2 years and am fortunate to have "met" many terrific people.

" Study, do your class work, and go to class ! "

I have a 3.77 GPA. I have had many successes while being a student at ISU. I have received membership into Phi U Honor Society, Kappa Delta Pi, and Golden Key. I have been on the Dean's List seven semesters, and will graduate cum laude. I will be starting my master's degree in August at ISU, and want to be a Youth Educator with the 4-H Program when I am finished.

" Pace yourself ! "
Don't let the lure of "on your own time" turn into "oh, my gosh, my paper's due tomorrow!" ISU is NOT an easy degree program; you will be pushed to do your best and beyond. The program is worth everything you put into it!
The ISU faculty in the Library Media section are the greatest, and they have helped so much as I pursued my master's degree. In the face of many personal challenges, my instructors were there with words of encouragement and a great deal of understanding.
Because of this wonderful program with its terrific faculty, I am now a full-time High School Library Media Specialist, and I adore my job.

The School of Nursing has managed to get me through the program that I started about 10 years ago. There were a few obstacles to overcome but Esther Acree managed to work them out in order for me to attain my degree. " Check the schedule DAILY - and devote a few hours DAILY to working on class assignments. "
I am completing the master of science in electronics and computer technology with a 4.0 GPA. It has been a rigorous and intense two years, but I have nothing but praise for the staff and faculty of Indiana State University and the distance learning system. The excellent organization and attention to detail has made my efforts to obtain an education possible.
I have maintained a 4.00 GPA, which is attributed to hard work and "staying on schedule."
If you are working toward a master's degree through the distance learning system and you work full time, I have two suggestions:
- If you want to take two classes at a time, only do it during the fall or spring semesters. Taking two classes during the accelerated summer session only allows 4-6 hours of sleep a night.
- Arrange your schedule so that the only work that you need to complete is your thesis or major project during your final semester. Taking a class while working on your thesis does not leave much time for sleep.

" As a 100% Internet student, my only advice is to "commit" to what you are doing. "
Make the most of every assignment and be intentional in your studies. Set aside a place and time to dedicate to school work, and make sure your family understands the importance and seclusion of this place and time. And don't take the ITE 495 capstone course with three other courses. It's simply too much to handle.
God willing, I'll graduate in May 2008 with a 4.0 GPA. My portfolio/awards information is on my web site at www.angieveach.com/portfolio.htm
I am extremely grateful for Ivy Tech Community College because without them, my degree and success at ISU would not have been possible. They got the ball rolling for me.
I also would like to acknowledge four individuals: (1) My husband for taking on the financial burden of supporting our household so I could go back to school full-time. (2) Dr. Carole Yaw for the way in which she interacts with her students and for introducing me to andragogy. She is a role model for any professor. (3) My friend, mentor, and fellow ISU graduate, Sheila Wiggins, for her unending support and gentle pushing from the very beginning of my academic career. I only wish I could be half the friend that she has been to me. (4) Jeanine Overfelt, who on several occasions went above and beyond the call to assist ISU students. She was the constant, stable, and sound place where I could find information and seek assistance. Someone like Jeanine is essential in every institution where change is a constant phenomenon.
My career goals exiting college have changed from what they were when I entered college. They now include: (1) finding a position that I genuinely love - not just one that pays well; (2) finding a position that values family time - not one that demands 24/7 connectivity; and (3) finding a position that will allow me to give back to my community. I'm currently the Technology Director at Carroll Consolidated School Corporation in Flora, Indiana. I'm hopeful that this position will continue to meet my three career goals.
One last thing. I'm extremely grateful for the numerous foundations or organizations that helped fund my ISU scholarships. Without this funding, I wouldn't be writing this today.
