The licensure program is an 18-credit-hour, graduate program leading to licensure as a middle / secondary teacher (grades six - 12).

The program consists of 18 credit hours of study in diverse teaching pedagogy and adolescent development, a content methods course, plus supervised field experiences. Students complete fieldwork and a student teaching experience with co-mentoring and supervision from University faculty and outstanding practicing teachers.

Upon completion of this program, individuals are eligible for an Indiana Initial Practitioner Licensure to teach in middle school, junior high school, and senior high school settings in the content areas in which the individual meets program requirements.

SPED 607 Diversity and Disability in Today's Schools (3 credits)
CIMT 501 Student Teaching (3 credits)
CIMT 602 Curriculum and Philosophy of Secondary Schools (2 credits)
CIMT 603 Instructional Strategies in Secondary Schools (2 credits)
CIMT 604 Promoting Student Development in Secondary Schools (2 credits)
Content Methods Course (2-3 credits)
Students complete approved credit in methods of teaching in the content specialization.

On-campus requirements include:

Admission Requirements
Individuals must apply for and meet minimum requirements for admission to Indiana State University. The GRE is not required.

In addition, admission to the Secondary Licensure Program requires the following:

  1. A bachelor's degree in a related content area with a grade point average of at least 3.0, both in the major content area and overall; or a bachelor's degree with a graduate point average of at least 2.5, both in the major and overall, and five years of relevant professional experience; or a graduate degree from an accredited institution of higher education in the subject area that the person intends to teach.
  2. PRAXIS I: PPST (Basic Skills: reading, writing, mathematics. PRAXIS II (in student's content area) is required prior to Student Teaching.
  3. Contact information for three recommendations
  4. A current resume
  5. Official transcripts of all post-secondary schools attended, including those indicating a bachelor degree from a regionally accredited institution.


  6. OTE:  All grade point averages from all institutions that contributed to the undergraduate degree are considered when calculating the overall grade point average (GPA).
