Graduate Application Instructions

 

All application materials should be submitted/uploaded on-line to Graduate Admissions by creating an account and following the instructions indicated here for U.S. CITIZENS AND PERMANENT RESIDENTS and the instructions here for INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS.

1. Personal statement

This essay describes in detail your research interests, your academic career, your career goals, and indicates the faculty member(s) you would like to work with. Students are expected to contact potential faculty advisors to discuss possible research opportunities.  Please indicate in your Personal Statement if you wish to be considered for Graduate Assistantship funding and a tuition fee waiver.  Funding is typically awarded only for the Fall semester each year.  To insure consideration for funding your application must be submitted by February 1stSubmit Personal Statement by uploading it to your Graduate Admissions account.

2. Curriculum vitae

Submit your CV by uploading it to your Graduate Admissions account.

3. Letters of reference

3 letters of recommendation required:
Submit reference names and emails through the on-line Graduate Admissions system.  Your references will be asked to submit recommendations electronically. References should be familiar with your academic, research, and/or fieldwork record.

4. supplemental documents

Though supplemental materials are not required, it is highly recommended that an applicant provide additional materials to the review committee.  These electronic documents may consist of: abstracts, conference posters, or writing samples.  Upload your supplemental documents to your Graduate Admissions account.

5. GRE scores

All applicants are required to submit GRE scores (taken within the past five years) for the Doctoral and Master's degree programs. Scores should be sent directly from ETS to Graduate Admissions. The ISU code is 1322 (photocopies are not accepted).

For PhD applicants a minimum verbal score of 153 (500 on prior scale) and quantitative score of 144 (500 on prior scale) are expected. If entering with a master's degree, students may submit their written thesis or a draft of their thesis to be evaluated as a demonstration of competence in writing original material and quantitative analyses if scores are below the minimum.

Submit official transcripts from all attended universities.  Also, the University will require a final transcript showing highest degree conferred or awarded. Transcripts should be sent to Graduate Admissions by the University/College you attended.

7. Official TOEFL scores

The TOEFL should  be sent directly from ETS, photocopies are not accepted.  Minimum score requirements are:  Paper based 550; computer based 213; and internet based 80.

8. Official transcripts and diploma

Submit official academic records (transcripts) and official diploma or certificate demonstrating  successful completion of a four-year bachelor degree program to the Graduate Admissions.  Academic records for all universities attended must be received in English and the native language. 

9. PASSPORT COPY

Copy of passport. If studying in the United States an I-94 card, F-1 or J-1 visa, and I-20 or DS2019 are also required. If currently in the United States but not studying, a copy of the applicable visa must also be submitted.

10. Affidavit of Financial Support

All applicants must supply an Affidavit of Financial Support before admission. Government sponsored applicants must provide an official or certified copy of the award, specifying validity for Indiana State University, listing the expenses and fees covered by the award, beginning and ending dates of study covered, the level/field of study, and the length of the award. The address for billing must also be included.
