Terry Dean

Dr. Terry Dean joined the faculty of Indiana State University in 2008 where he serves as Instructor of Musicology. He holds the M.A. and Ph.D. in historical musicology from The University of Georgia. Entitled "The Nineteenth-Century Russian Operatic Roots of Sergei Prokofyev's War and Peace," his dissertation assesses Prokofyev's opera in the context of its relationship with the nineteenth-century Russian opera tradition. Other areas of interest include Socialist realism in music, primitivist aesthetics, issues of gender in Russian and Soviet opera, American musical theater, and the music of contemporary female popular singers. In addition to his work in musicology, Dr. Dean completed graduate course work in horn performance at West Virginia University under Virginia Thompson and remains an active performer of chamber and orchestral music.

Prior to his appointment, Dr. Dean served on the faculties of Gainesville State and Piedmont Colleges in Georgia. He also taught courses through the University System of Georgia's Independent and Distance Learning Program and worked as part of The University of Georgia Writing Intensive and Honors Programs. At ISU, Dr. Dean teaches courses in music history, popular music, world music, and research methodologies/music bibliography.
