Department of Music
Music Education
Students in Music Education at Indiana State University choose between
two curriculum offerings: Instrumental/General major or Choral/General
major. Each major will lead to Indiana K-12 teaching licensure in the
two specified areas of study. Students who wish to be certified in Instrumental,
Choral, and General may elect another semester of courses to complete
the area licensure.
The Music Education Division working with the Department of Curriculum,
Instruction and Media Technology in the School of Education strives
to provide students with competencies needed to meet the Indiana Professional
Standards Board guidelines for licensure. Students through coursework,
observation, and teaching in public school settings, and participation
in professional opportunities are prepared to successfully enter the
teaching profession.
The student chapter of the Music Educators
National Conference (MENC) provides music education majors with
diverse ways to be involved in the profession through informative
programs, attendance at professional conferences, and the receipt
of the state and national journal.
The Department of Music is proud of the many outstanding graduates
of the music education program who are teachers in the public schools
of Indiana and across the states. Music Education at ISU has a strong
heritage of excellence and is seeking students who are challenged
by the prospect of educating young people into the rewards provided
by music.
