Arthur Halpern, professor of chemistry at Indiana State University, has been named an associate editor of the Journal of Chemical Education.
The 75-year-old journal is published monthly by the Division of Chemical Education of the American Chemical Society. It publishes peer-reviewed articles dealing with many aspects of chemical education at the university as well as pre-college levels. Areas of focus include new or improved laboratory-based experiments, techniques in teaching chemistry, results and reviews of current educational research, and articles on new concepts and methods in chemical education.
As an associate editor, Halpern's duties will include assigning reviewers for manuscripts, making recommendations on the appropriateness of manuscripts for publication, serving on the journal's editorial board, and assisting in the solicitation of appropriate contributions.
"Professor Halpern's willingness to serve in this position speaks to his reputation and to that of his scholarly work. His expertise as a chemical educator will help make the journal even stronger - an international powerhouse in the area," said journal Editor Norbert J. Pienta, associate professor of chemistry at the University of Iowa.
An Indiana State faculty member since 1990, Halpern has authored more than 100 academic publications, including a physical chemistry laboratory textbook. He has also earned professional recognition as an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellow, NATO Senior Scientist Fellow, as a member of a National Research Council advisory panel, a Department of Energy Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship Review Panel and has participated on review panels for the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health. In April, he received the ISU President's Medal, the university's highest award for faculty.
