Enrollment at Indiana State University is up nearly 4 percent from this time last year and the spring semester head count is at its highest level in four years.
The total student head count for spring semester stands at 9,765. That's an increase of 363 students, or nearly 4 percent, from spring 2009, with most of the growth (290 students) coming among returning students.
It is the second straight semester in which Indiana State has experienced year-to-year growth. The increase is across-the-board - in new and returning students, transfer students and graduate students.
"Faculty, staff, and administrators at ISU have been working very hard and strategically to recruit and retain more students for the spring semester. Our efforts are demonstrated in these positive numbers. In recent years, we have launched a number of new and aggressive recruitment and retention initiatives and it seems those efforts are helping to produce results," said John Beacon, vice president for enrollment, marketing and communications.
Increased enrollment and student success are key elements of a five-year strategic plan Indiana State President Dan Bradley unveiled last fall.
A further breakdown of the numbers shows continued growth in in-state, out-of-state and international students, an increase of more than 4 percent in total student credit hours, a nearly 12 percent increase in new freshmen and a more than 25 percent jump in transfer students, primarily from Ivy Tech Community College.
"Indiana State has a number of transfer agreements with Ivy Tech and we have admissions counselors based at several Ivy Tech campuses to ensure a smooth transition for students who chose to begin their higher education at a community college. Our longstanding partnership is stronger than ever and is clearly paying off for students," said Rich Toomey, executive director of admissions at Indiana State.
