An invitation has Indiana State University Professor Mary Howard-Hamilton packing her bags to head to England in mid-March.

Officials with the Oxford Round Table, held at the University of Oxford, invited Howard-Hamilton, professor of educational leadership, administration and foundations, to present a paper at the 20th annual conference March 14-19. The Oxford Round Table allows academics to discuss issues that enrich the human experience and condition. This year's conference focuses on "Women at Work: Benefits and Barriers."

Howard-Hamilton, whose research focuses on women of color in higher education, will present a paper titled "Women of Color in the American Higher Education System: Promises, Perils, and Pitfalls." She researched African-American, Latino, Latina and Native American tenure-track and tenured professors and examined their different rates of burnout.

"Women of color had higher levels of stress and burnout than men," she said. "Latinas experienced the highest levels of burnout and stress followed by African-American women. Women mentor and support more students and that led to more stressors for the women."

Howard-Hamilton said she looks forward to talking with colleagues from across the United States and world for five days about gender issues.

"I'm excited about it," she said. "I think it will generate new research ideas for me. I hope that it will also branch off into new research teams."

In addition to being in the atmosphere steeped in education, Howard-Hamilton plans to partake in an English tradition.

"One of the things I'm going to do besides the Round Table is the high tea in one of the restaurants," she said.
