Sorority president receives national recognition

July 6, 2011

Recent Indiana State University graduate Megan Marvin has received the Stella George Stern Perry Award for Most Outstanding Collegiate Chapter President of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority.

The Perry Award is the highest distinction given to a collegiate member of Alpha Omicron Pi. Marvin is a member of the Kappa Alpha chapter.

Qualifications include maintaining an academic average of a B or higher, exhibiting exceptional character, performing rituals sincerely and giving outstanding service to her chapter, among other requirements. An application and two letters of recommendation were necessary for eligibility.

The Perry Award is named for the founder of Alpha Omicron Pi, Stella George Stern Perry, who was the first President of Alpha Chapter at Barnard College and the first President of Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity.

Marvin received the award when she and Kappa Alpha Chapter advisor Christina Cantrell traveled to Arizona for the Rose Banquet at the Founder's Convention on June 25. Cantrell submitted the application for Marvin.

One staff member who recommended Marvin for the award was Tracy Machtan, assistant director of student activities and organizations.

"Through my work with Ms. Marvin over the past eight months, I have come to see her as a very confident and dependable woman," Machtan writes, "Ms. Marvin exemplifies Alpha Omicron Pi's ideals of leadership, excellence, and integrity. She truly is a living example for her fellow collegians."
