'73 grad returning as alumni director

August 29, 2011

The Indiana State University Foundation has named Charles DeMaio to serve as executive director of the ISU Alumni Association.

DeMaio, a 1973 Indiana State graduate, has remained connected to the university and active on its behalf throughout a more than 30-year career in corporate management and not-for-profit development.

"Charlie truly understands the work of the Alumni Association. As the executive director he will work closely with the Alumni Board to develop a long-term strategic vision for the organization and its programs," Gene Crume, president of the ISU Foundation said. "I am confident that his leadership will help strengthen alumni engagement by focusing on our alumni clubs, membership and other involvement opportunities."

Currently director of development for the Lambda Chi Alpha Educational Foundation, DeMaio previously served in a variety of management positions in the corporate world, holding such titles as vice president of sales, vice president of marketing, division manager and national account manager.

University President Dan Bradley said DeMaio "brings a wealth of experience to this position with an extensive background in corporate management and his current position with Lambda Chi. Most importantly, Charlie has been an active alumnus of Indiana State and has served as an exemplary volunteer leader. I look forward to working with him to engage other alumni in advancing their university."

DeMaio said in his youth, Indiana State formed the bedrock for his future life as it did for thousands of other alumni and returning to serve the university and its more than 90,000 alumni is a way to say thanks.

"Not only were we given the opportunity for an outstanding education, as undergraduates, we had experiences that have shaped our lives in lasting and meaningful ways," he said. "At ISU, many met spouses, future business partners and formed lifetime bonds. Without Indiana State as our foundation, life as we know it would be quite different. I can never give back to ISU what it has given to me. Through success and failure, highs and lows, our alma mater has always been there as a beacon always calling out to us, ‘Welcome home.'"

DeMaio, a Carmel resident, is a past president of the ISU Alumni Association and has served on the ISU Foundation board as well as numerous university, foundation and fraternity committees and boards. He received the university's Distinguished Service Award in 2005 and the William Albert Jones Medal for service to the university president in 2008. He will begin his new duties at Indiana State on Sept. 19.
