AAUW to celebrate its founding 130 years ago

November 10, 2011

The Wabash Valley plans to celebrate the founding of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) 130 years ago at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16.

The AAUW of the Wabash Valley, Indiana State University Women's Studies and the Indiana State University Cunningham Memorial Library are sponsoring the event in the library's events area.

The association seeks to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.

"It really fills an important niche," said Marsha Miller, ISU's AAUW representative and ISU reference/instruction librarian, adding the association provides opportunities to give back to a community through education and leadership.

Barbara Kanning, president of Indiana AAUW, will serve as the guest speaker during the event as she discusses the role of the association through its history. Miller will share ways people can be involved in the association, including through the National Conference of College Women Student Leaders. The newest published research by the AAUW, "Crossing the Line: Sexual Harassment at School," will be presented.

For at least 50 years, ISU has been an institutional partner with the association, and the local branch has long been active in the community, including aiding in starting Head Start in the Wabash Valley, and, for many years having a used book sale on the ISU campus, Miller said. The national organization also provides scholarships and fellowships for female graduate students. Since 1999, ISU has hosted the state AAUW's website, at www.indstate.edu/aauw-in/.

Miller would like to have 130 undergraduates become e-student affiliate members on the day of the reception, to represent the 130th anniversary. Students can do so while attending the reception, but can also join at any time while an ISU undergraduate by going to the national site, www.aauw.org. Membership is free for undergraduate students. Other memberships are available as well for anyone who has a four-year or two-year college degree, who supports AAUW's mission.

The celebration is free and open to the public.
