School of Music to Present Spring Choral Showcase March 30

March 26, 2012

The Indiana State University School of Music will present a Spring Choral Showcase Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 30 in the University Hall Theater.

The concert will feature the Women's Glee Club, Sycamore Singers, and Concert Choir. The Concert Choir, under the direction of Scott Buchanan, will perform a diverse program of works that are both sacred and secular in nature. Composers featured include Felix Mendelssohn, Ola Gjeilo, Jeffery Ames, David Childs, and Eric Whitacre. The choir will be accompanied by Curt Pennington.

Jason Fishburn, Anna Buck, and Katie Ulrich will serve as soloists and Katie Richard, Kyle Lutes, Nate Spellman, and Jacob Rowe will be featured instrumentalists.

The Women's Glee Club, under the direction of Colleen Davis and graduate assistant Kaleb Abbott, will perform works by Handel, Mozart, Schubert, James Gordon, and Andre Thomas. ISU graduate and current professional singer, Sarah Stone, will appear as a guest soloist. Andrea Marlowe serves as the accompanist for the ensemble and Janelle Huber, Jacob Somers will be featured instrumentalists.

The Sycamore Singers will open the concert with music from the late 16th - and early 17th - centuries. Two distinct genres from that time period will be represented. Works by Thomas Morley, Orlando Gibbons, John Bennett, and John Dowland will represent the English madrigal genre. These will be followed by three Latin motets written by Italian composers Andrea Gabrieli, Francesco Soriano, and Giacomo Carissimi.

These selections, along with many others will be performed by 24 members of the Sycamore Singers during an upcoming trip to Florence, Italy. During May 13-21, the group will have four performances in the historic Italian city - Santa Maria De'Ricci Church, Teatro di Cestello Theater and at St. James American Church.

The trip is the culmination of Buchanan's sabbatical project of early Baroque music by lesser-known Italian composers. The chorus will perform five or six works by those composers, complemented by English madrigals and Americana music.

Admission to the event is free and attendance by campus and community members is encouraged. For more information, contact the School of Music at 812-237-2771 or the Choral Office at 812-237-4590.
