Community Garden Party set for Aug. 18

August 6, 2012

Celebrate local gardens and gardeners at the Community Garden Party from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Indiana State University Community Garden, located at the corner of 11th and Chestnut streets.

The event will feature garden tours, information tables, an opportunity to connect with other gardeners, live music by Brent McPike and Solly Burton and the Yearbook Committee and locally sourced refreshments.

"This event is open to anyone with an interest in gardening," said Norbert Gottschling, a member of Our Green Valley Alliance.

"There's a statewide initiative to support gardening," Gottschling said. "This event is being held in conjunction with that celebration."

The event is an opportunity to learn more about community gardens located throughout Terre Haute. In addition to Indiana State's garden, according to Gottschling, there are others - The Giving Garden at the Vigo County Fairgrounds, a garden tended by employees of the Federal Correctional Complex and a garden at the ISU Early Childhood Education Center that is used as a teaching tool.

The Aug. 18 event is informational, as well as environmentally-friendly.

"We're striving to be a zero-waste event," Gottschling said. "Everything will be recyclable or compostable."

Patrons attending the Farmer's Market are encouraged to stop by the event after finishing their shopping. Parking is available on both 11th and Chestnuts streets as well as the ISU lot on the west side of 11th street.

The Community Garden Party is sponsored by Indiana State University, Our Green Valley Alliance for Sustainability, Sustainable Indiana 2016, and Clabber Girl.

The Garden Party is free and open to the public. For more information, go to www.ourgreenvalley.org  .
