University Symphony Concert to feature student soloists

November 7, 2012

The Indiana State University Symphony Orchestra will present a concert Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in Tilson Auditorium.

Three student winners of the annual Paul W. Hagan Concerto/Aria Auditions will be featured in a variety-filled program. Student mezzo-soprano Brittany Mosely will perform "Va! Laisse couler mes larmes" from the opera "Werther," by Jules Massenet. "A Night Piece", for flute and strings by Arthur Foote, will be the next work, and will feature Mateo Garcia. Anna Buck, soprano, will sing the well-known aria "Steal Me Sweet Thief" from Gian Carlo Menotti's opera "The Old Maid and the Thief."

The orchestra, under the direction of conductor William Davis, will begin with Mozart's "Overture to Lucio Silla". This early work of the master is unusual in that it is in three short "movements", like a tiny symphony. Other works to be performed include "Lieutenant Kije Suite", by Sergei Prokofieff and a set of pieces from Wagner's opera "Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg."

Admission to the event is free and attendance by campus and community members is encouraged. For more information, contact the School of Music at 812-237-2771.
