Operation Pull-Over (OPO)

In 2009, MotoGP Champion Nicky Hayden graciously agreed to act as a spoksperson for the state's growing motorcycle safety and awareness programs. As part of his contributions, he was featured in two public service announcements and several print campaigns focusing on drinking and riding and motorist awareness.

For 2010, Nicky continues to lend his support to making Indiana roadways safer for motorcyclists with two new spots.

The ISU Public Safety Department along with local law enforcement agencies participate in Operation Pull Over (OPO). OPO is funded through the Governor's Council on Dangerous and Impaired Driving, a division of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. The goal of OPO is to reduce fatalities by emphasizing and enforcing passenger restraint and child passenger restraint usage, as well as impaired driving laws.

OPO is an educational and an enforcement driven program. As a result, Public Safety Officers participating in OPO have received training and certifications in Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) and Traffic Occupant Protection Strategies (TOPS). Officers also exercise zero tolerance when it comes to enforcing these laws.

After the completion of the enforcement period, post surveys will be conducted at the same locations. The purpose of these surveys is to monitor progress in restraint usage. For more information, contact Crime Prevention Officer at (812) 237-5555.
