Belaying
Belaying is the task of safely securing a climber by a rope, feeding
the rope out, taking up slack and safely lowering the climber.
This is a skill which requires some basic instruction. The climbing wall staff is not present for the purpose of belaying. However, the climbing wall staff may belay when time allows.
Therefore climbers should be expected to bring their own belayers. Belayers must hold a current “ISU Belay Card.” These cards will be given upon successful completion of a belay workshop. The workshops will be taught on a regular basis and will typically take one hour to complete.
All participants are strongly encouraged to take a belay workshop and receive a “belay card.” The first several days of wall operation will be dedicated to getting as many participants through belay workshops as possible.
Belay cards hold belay privileges for the Sycamore Climbing Wall only!
Climbers may wear their own harnesses and/or helmets upon an approved inspection by the staff. Only ISU carabiners, belay devices and ropes may be used. Climbers should wear climbing shoes, athletic shoes or hiking footwear. Only enclosed chalk balls or resin bags may be used. No loose chalk.
All climbers will be required to go through a short wall orientation which includes fitting of a harness and helmet, instruction on securing the belay rope and safety procedures.
