Indiana State University offers exemption exams that allow students to "test out" of specific courses.
Students do not receive credit for exemption exams or for "testing out" of classes.

Important note: Before taking any exemption exam, students must check with an ISU academic advisor to ensure that the examination will be valid.
Currently, exemption exams are available for the following:
- CHEM 100 - Chemistry: Reactions and Reason
- CHEM 103 - Elementary Chemistry
- CHEM 104 - Elementary Organic and Biochemistry
- CHEM 105 - General Chemistry I
- COMM 101 - Introduction to Speech Communication:
Individual must have SAT verbal scores of 580 or above, or ACT scores of 23 or above.

Foreign Language Placement Exams:
By successfully completing the level you place into, credit can be received for all lower levels.

- Information Technology Literacy (Test Out Option):
To schedule this exam (known as the Tek.Xam), students should contact the University Testing Office at (812) 237-7666.
- MATH 102 - Quantitative Literacy Exemption Test:
This exam is available to students at a distance and on-campus. To schedule the exam, students should contact the University Testing Office at (812) 237-7666 or toll-free at (888) 237-8080.
Students are encouraged to take the free practice exam prior to taking the actual Quantitative Literacy Exam. The practice exam is located at http://math.indstate.edu/page.aspx?id=35
