Alumni Mentor program

Networking and connecting with alumni who have similar interest is a key tool for success! Advice and interaction, that this program offers, will monumentally help you prepare for seeking jobs and understanding what you need at ISU to succeed such as classes (electives) that you should take. Alumni love to hear from students and want to give advice! We strongly encourage you to take advantage of this program as it can be rewarding and beneficial in so many ways.

Questions to ask Alumni Mentors

The Department of Earth and Environmental Systems provides mentoring opportunities that connect undergraduate and graduate students with our alumni.  The following list of alumni are willing to share their experiences to help you start your professional careers.

Questions that you may consider asking include:

How do you use your major in your current career?

What specific skills are companies looking for?

What graduate programs would you recommend?

What can I expect my first year in graduate school?  How is graduate school different from an undergraduate program?

What is the work lifestyle like?  Would I spend most of my time in the lab, field, or office?

What range of pay should I request from an employer?

How can I make my resume stronger and what information should I include on a resume?

What information should I include in a cover letter?

What type of questions would I be asked in an interview?

How is a video interview conducted and what can I expect?

Outside of the classroom, what opportunities/experiences were most beneficial?

Should I join any professional organizations to improve networking?

Did you believe that you needed to obtain more schooling after your bachelor’s degree?

In retrospect, what would you have done differently as an undergraduate?

What elective courses would you recommend taking to prepare for graduate studies/professional careers in _______?

What can I expect from a company during my first year of employment?

What words of wisdom can you offer a current undergraduate student?

Did you pursue research opportunities, internships, or summer employment in your area of study while you were an undergraduate?  If so, did they help you with your career?  Would you recommend that I explore these opportunities while I am at ISU and could you recommend any companies that may offer internships or summer positions?
