Basic Skills Test Requirements

To enroll in an educator preparation program, a teacher education candidate must complete the Basic Skills Test Requirements in Reading, Writing, and Math.  This requirement can be met by completing one of the following options:

  1. By taking one of the following tests. 
    1. CASA
    2. Praxis (Core Academic Skills for Educators)
    3. ACT
    4. SAT

Cut off scores are listed in Table 1.Candidates may mix and match (i.e., a candidate may meet the SAT score for Reading and Mathematics and the Praxis Core for Writing).

      2. A score of 1100 or higher on the SAT if taken prior to March 1, 2016, (Critical Reading and Math)

      3. GRE with the following cut-off scores:  Verbal reasoning reading (151); Quantitative Reasoning Mathematics (153)

      4. Successful completion of bachelor’s degree or higher

How to Sign up for the Praxis (Core Academic Skills for Educators)

  1. Log into ets.org
  2. Click on Products
  3. Choose Educator Licensure> Praxis
  4. Create an account by clicking in the upper right corner My Praxis Account
  5. Under Registrations and Orders, click Register for a Test
  6. Go through the following pages which include an Acknowledgment page, a Confirm Your Account page, and a Background Information page.
  7. On the Search and Select Tests page, click on EPP Test Requirements. (Ignore the State/Agency Required Tests section)
  8. You can now scroll down to find the tests offered.

You will need to sign up for math, reading, and writing. You can sign up for individual tests or you can choose to take all three together, which is much less expensive.

5752 Combined test—300 minutes--$150.00

5713 Reading test—120 minutes--$90.00

5723 Writing test—150 minutes--$90.00
