Orbitrap Mass Spectrometer
A Thermo Q-Exactive Focus was acquired in 2015, funded by a Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) grant (CHE-1531972) from the National Science Foundation and was installed in December, 2015. It is housed in room S-034 and is used for both research and laboratory courses. This spectrometer has high resolution (70,000) and is capable of electrospray (ESI) and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) modes and can do tandem mass spectrometry (MS2). It can be used for structure elucidation of small molecules and sequencing of peptides and proteins. The LC front end is a Waters Acquity H-Class UHPLC, purchased with department funds in 2010. It will be used by students in several courses as well as by research students in the Department and is also available for use by other departments and academic users with training. See instrument managers Dr. Fitch or Dr. Noll for training.
