Middle School Mathematics Teaching (BS)

Description

The University offers a bachelor of science (BS) in middle school mathematics for students who wish to obtain licensure in mathematics for grades five through eight.

This program is designed for students who only want to teach middle school mathematics. The program offers these students a shorter pathway to obtain middle school licensure. The program also better prepares future educators to navigate the unique developmental stage of middle school students (grades five through eight).

Students complete required mathematics courses in the following areas: analytic geometry, calculus, statistics, concepts of number and operations, geometry, discrete mathematics, and history of mathematics.

In addition, students complete professional education courses to prepare them for teaching and participate in early field experiences in local middle schools.

Before graduating, all students work as student teachers and obtain experience in providing education to middle school students. In addition, many of our students provide help with mathematics for area students or work as math tutors in the Math Lab.

Advisors work with each student in the selection of courses prior to registration each semester. Each student's study benefits from use of the Center of Mathematics Education Resource Library housed on the second floor of University Hall.

Mathematics teaching majors can join and participate in the student chapter of the honorary mathematics fraternity, Pi Mu Epsilon. Other opportunities include the University's Honors Program and study abroad programs—which range from summer programs to a single semester or a full academic year in over 56 countries.

Note: The University also offers a mathematics teaching major that leads to licensure for grades five through 12. Also offered is an elementary education major coupled with a middle school mathematics minor.

Careers

Graduates are prepared to teach mathematics to students in middle schools (grades five through eight) throughout the country. The job placement rate for mathematics teaching graduates is excellent. There is a critical shortage of qualified math teachers in Indiana and throughout the United States.

In addition, the Mathematics Teaching Program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and Indiana State Board of Education.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Students have many sources of financial support for their studies, including financial aid, work-study programs, veterans' benefits, and special scholarships for entering freshmen and transfer students.

In addition, the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science awards a number of scholarships.
