Community Engagement Classification
Indiana State University
2015 Community Engagement Elective Re-Classification
Carnegie Foundation for Advancement of Teaching
The classification for Community Engagement is an elective classification, meaning that it is based on voluntary participation by institutions. The elective classification involves data collection and documentation of important aspects of institutional mission, identity and commitments, and requires substantial effort invested by participating institutions.
The classification is not an award. It is an evidence-based documentation of institutional practice to be used in a process of self-assessment and quality improvement. The documentation is reviewed to determine whether the institution qualifies for recognition as a community engaged institution.
Indiana State University’s Relevant History
Indiana State University initially earned both Curricular Engagement and Outreach and Partnerships classifications in 2006. This was the first time either of these elective classifications were available. At this time, the Carnegie Foundation offers only a single elective classification called, Community Engagement. It essentially combines the two classifications currently held by ISU. We are seeking the Community Engagement classification through the re-classification process.
