Welcome Letter

Welcome to Plane Tree, Indiana State University’s online literary journal. Formerly known as Grasslands ReviewPlane Tree is a reimagining of the print journal in an online space. We are excited to move to a fully digital platform with the opportunities to publish innovative work that may not be possible in print.

The first issue is focused on fiction and takes readers through stories about miracle cures and family dynamics, constraint and abrupt endings, blends mathematics and physics with the supernatural.
On the 10th anniversary of Grasslands Review’s final issue, we are pleased to present issue 1 of Plane Tree. Welcome.

Fiction Editor & Editor-in-Chief

The Creative Writing faculty of Indiana State University welcomes you to Issue 3 of Plane Tree, our very own literary journal.  Like so many other projects out there, this issue was delayed some by the pandemic, but we believe it worth the wait.  So sit back and enjoy the work of these seven incredibly talented writers.

Creative Nonfiction Editor

Plane Tree: Nature in Crisis is the journal’s fourth issue and the first published as a special thematic issue bringing together works of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Here, nine writers from every corner of the US to Australia explore the human relationship with Nature defined by crisis, loss, mourning—and hope. This issue starts with the premise that ongoing climate and ecological crises define our moment in the Anthropocene, affecting every human community and biological niche on planet Earth. With human civilization singularly responsible for the losses we witness and endure, this decisive decade is poised on a razor’s edge between assurance of future chaos defined by mass suffering and the prospect of survival with profound healing. The following works speak to the challenge and possibility of artful writing engaging with the reality of Nature in crisis.
