Painting - Undergraduate

Undergraduate painting courses at Indiana State University are designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of the theories and practices associated with painting. Introductory courses offer a foundational experience that allows students to become familiar with the materials, techniques, and processes associated with oil paint, while intermediate courses challenge students to explore various painting media as well as more experimental approaches to image-making; upper-level courses encourage creative risk-taking, individually directed research, and the development of a cohesive body of work.

Across the curriculum, students become conversant in historical and contemporary approaches to painting through studio work, class discussions and presentations, and written assignments; individual and group critiques encourage students to approach their own work, and the work of others, thoughtfully and knowledgably. Incorporation of painting techniques and media with those of digital art, drawing, photography, and printmaking is encouraged as a vital component of the 2D emphasis.

Edgar Degas said, “Painting is easy when you don’t know how, but very difficult when you do.” Undergraduate painting classes at ISU challenge students to develop a comprehensive understanding of painting, embrace its difficulty, and begin to cultivate an authentic, expressive, creative voice.
