15th Annual Ethics Conference

The 15th Annual Ethics Conference will take place on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 in the Hulman Memorial Student Union (HMSU) Dede rooms on Indiana State University’s campus in Terre Haute, Indiana. The day-long conference will feature a luncheon keynote and multiple breakout speakers - all on the topic of Ethics. The speakers will be from a wide variety of careers and backgrounds. Denny Sponsel is the CEO and Owner of RJE Business Interiors. While he may have spent the last 40 years improving workplace design throughout the Midwest, his true passion lies in providing RJE’s clients with the best possible customer experience. Kelsey M. Chase

“Ethics in Law: Wrongful Convictions and Applied Scenarios”

Exploring the legal profession and the role ethics plays in the lives of legal professionals. This breakout session will examine wrongful conviction cases and applied scenarios of ethics in law today.

Ms. Chase graduated cum laude from Indiana State University in 2015 with her Bachelors of Science in Criminology with Minors in Psychology and Dance. Upon graduation, Ms. Chase attended Northern Kentucky University Salmon P. Chase College of Law. While in law school, Ms. Chase helped to start an alliance in the Northern Kentucky area that assisted children and teens experiencing homelessness, and which continues to this day. During her second year of law school, Ms. Chase was a member of the Kentucky Innocence Project where she worked on two criminal cases in an effort to seek the truth. Ms. Chase was admitted to practice law in 2019 and is an associate attorney at Wright, Shagley & Lowery in Terre Haute, Indiana. During law school and since being admitted to the bar, Ms. Chase has litigated and assisted in a variety of practice areas, including business law, family law, criminal and personal injury cases.

“Business and Personal Ethics in Today’s Dynamic Workplace and How Leaders Adapt”

This presentation will examine how personal ethics impact decision making in a changing workplace environment and how company leaders adapt.

Gordon McCance is the Executive Vice President of Marketing, Strategic Planning and Business Development at MasterBrand Cabinets. MasterBrand Cabinets is the largest operating company in the Fortune Brands Home & Security (FBHS-NYSE) portfolio.  In his marketing role, he oversees branding, channel management, digital marketing, pricing and customer experience. He also leads the company’s annual strategic plan and due diligence on acquisitions. Before MasterBrand, Gordon served as Vice President of Retail Sales at Master Lock Company. Mr. McCance graduated from Ohio University (BS Advertising Management) and earned his MBA from Baldwin-Wallace University. He currently resides in Pewaukee, WI with his wife and three children.

Dr. James “Richard” Swindell

Department of Aviation Technology Professor, Indiana State University

“Flying Ethically: Exploring Corporate & Social Responsibility in the Airline Industry”

Airlines are public trust organizations, moving passengers and cargo safely and efficiently through a complex and multivariate system, delivering them as contracted to their destinations – mostly on time and certainly more quickly and comfortably than any other mode of transportation. So why do customers, the media, and even employees so often denigrate and malign the air carriers? This breakout session will take a look at what integrity, loyalty, justice, parity and professionalism mean through the lens of the world’s most heavily regulated industry.

When Dr. Swindell is not instructing in the Department of Aviation Technology, he is a San Francisco-based pilot with United Airlines, holding an Air Transport Pilot certificate with type ratings in the Canadair CL-65, Boeing 737, 757, 767; and Airbus 320.  A former military officer, Captain Swindell has also served the airline industry as a member of the Air Line Pilots Association in multiple capacities including air safety and accident investigation, grievance and negotiations, and most recently as the chairman of the professional development group, concentrating on advancing membership benefits, providing aviation educational outreach, assisting veterans transitioning to civilian airline flying.

“What Happens When Employees Go Viral?"

Employees are the most valuable asset in any company, so what happens when they become the most viral? This breakout session will explore how companies navigate the increasing trend of unofficial employee influencers by sharing unfiltered behind-the-scenes view of their work and the ethical implications that follow.

Richey is a 2017 graduate of Indiana State University where she majored in communications with a focus in public relations. During her time at Indiana State, Richey was involved in the Alumni Association, Alpha Sigma Alpha, and State Dance Marathon. Upon graduation, Richey began her career at Indianapolis-based Republic Airways where she is responsible for the company’s social media strategy and developing the company brand and awareness to attract, acquire and retain top talent. She also works closely with Republic’s associate engagement and corporate and community initiatives. Richey lives in downtown Indianapolis and supports her alma mater and the Indianapolis community as a member of Indiana State’s Alumni Association Board, State Dance Marathon Alumni Board and the Indianapolis American Cancer Society Guild.

Bob Schultz

An overview of the importance of maintaining character and have an entrepreneurial spirit in today’s changing world. This presentation will dive into how young leaders can adapt in changing environments.

Bob Schultz is the President of Schultz Investment Company, a private family office. He also serves as Chairman of AKRA Builders, Inc., a multi-state commercial construction firm.  Finally he is on the board of Midland States Bank, a $6 billion publicly traded financial institution based in Effingham, Illinois.  Bob serves a variety of non-profit entities. He co-founded the Effingham Regional Incubator Network, a collection of incubator and shared-work space across Effingham County.  He has a finance degree from the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) as well as a law degree from the University of Notre Dame Law School.

Fraternity and Sorority Life is foundational part of many students’ lives on college campuses across the US, but are values and ethical behaviors being up held in these organizations today? Are ethics and values in FSL antiquated thoughts that no longer hold meaning?

David Westol served nine years as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Michigan followed by 18 years as CEO of Theta Chi Fraternity.  He has provided consulting services to a wide variety of women's and men's national fraternities and sororities since 2007 including investigations and membership reviews.  He is a recipient of the Silver and Gold medals from the North American Interfraternity Conference.

Donna Williams

 An examination of unethical behavior in organizations especially as respects the "Me, Too" and "Time's Up" movements and the insurance industry's role in the resulting claims.

Donna Rowling Williams is a Vice President with Lockton Companies, an insurance brokerage serving over 52,000 clients. With 30 years in the insurance industry, Donna began her career at Liberty Mutual in Atlanta working in loss control and underwriting. Eventually leaving Liberty Mutual, Donna joined Marsh & McLennan as a broker. All of this experience has led her to her current position of Senior Account Executive at Lockton Companies managing a team of product line experts to address the ever-changing global insurance and risk management needs of their private equity clients. Donna is a graduate of Eastern Illinois University, spends her time volunteering in her community, and is the proud mother of 3 young adults.
